Do you have any spare time to help a dog rescue centre?
Saving Yorkshire’s Dogs (SYD) was set up in July 2014 to rescue dogs from urgent “put to sleep” situations and place them in foster care until they can be rehomed or a suitable rescue space becomes available for them. The centre is entirely run by volunteers giving their time and expertise whenever they can.
Funds for SYD come from regular fund raising, monthly donations from Friends of SYD and donations when a dog is rehomed.
Extra help is always needed so please get in touch if you can assist in the following (or any other) areas –
Kennel Care Team
“Hands on” at the kennels, dog walking, grooming, playing, cleaning & feeding: This is the day to day care of the dogs. The volunteers try to make life as normal as possible with lots of human interaction.
There is always a need for as many Kennel volunteers as possible. This ensures extra cover at the kennels for socialising of the dogs in our care plus allows for at least two volunteers to be on duty at all times. SYD is a seven day a week operation and cover is required every day so even if you can help at weekends or bank holidays that would be great. Extra volunteers are needed for scenarios such as when we have large dogs in our care that need taking to the large secure paddock for a good run around or for when cover is needed for when day to day volunteers go on holiday.
In the future there are plans to hold training and development sessions for volunteers to gain skills in dog training, grooming and canine first aid. In addition to this there are plans for SYD’s qualified canine behaviourists to deliver training to volunteers who are interested.
Please get in touch if you would like to help at the kennels – the only stipulation is that you must be 18 or over for insurance purposes: Even if it’s only one day a month, that’s fine. Please use the form below to volunteer or if you would like more information and Margaret Allison, the SYD volunteer co-ordinator, will be in touch.
Can you help organise fundraising events or are you able to find out who is willing to donate materials and supplies for the upkeep, improvement and running of the kennels?
If you are handy with a hammer and nails, a saw, a trowel, etc. and can spare a few hours from time to time then your help would be much appreciated.
Fosterers – Download document here
SYD is always needing fosterers: They are an essential part of how SYD rescues dogs . Having a network of fosterers allows us to increase the numbers of dogs we can save from an uncertain future But the most important thing is it allows us to see what the dogs are like in a home situation. While our kennels are fantastic they are not like a real home and dogs do change once they are out of kennels and “at home”.
To be a fosterer some experience of dog ownership would be the ideal but that can be discussed with our SYD volunteer coordinator. Ideally the fosterers need to live around North Yorkshire but again that isn’t set in stone. Fosterers also need to have the time to care for the dogs in their care: Some will have come from stressful situations and need time to calm down and be rehabilitated by the fosterer plus our expert SYD Kennel Care Team. We also have close ties with dog trainers and dog behaviourists and use their wealth of experience and knowledge where necessary. Basically, fosterers are helped as much as they want and are always part of the SYD team.
To volunteer please either call Margaret on 07999 653115 or fill out the form below and we will get back to you in the near future and thank you for your support.
